I’ve worked at the University of Sunderland since 2024 as Head of Operations in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellbeing. From day one, I noticed and appreciated how open, welcoming, and supportive colleagues were. It genuinely brings me joy at work, and it set the tone for the kind of environment I want to help create in return.

Creating an environment within which people, and by extension the organisation, can thrive is a core thread that runs through everything I do. My approach is grounded in authenticity, inclusivity, trust and transparency, and I work hard to foster a culture of mutual respect where people feel valued and different perspectives are genuinely welcomed.

I aim to demonstrate inclusivity by being people-centred and values-led in my day-to-day work. I actively invite views and welcome constructive challenge from colleagues across academic and professional services teams, particularly where decisions affect how people work. My goal is to build inclusive teams and cultures that aren’t constrained by hierarchy, where people feel safe to speak openly, share ideas and contribute to honest dialogue. Creating that sense of collegiality is really important to me.

I take particular satisfaction in championing other people’s efforts, celebrating their successes, and making space for quieter voices to be heard and recognised. I appreciate that individuals need different conditions to succeed, so I try to create a culture that supports colleagues to bring their authentic selves to work.

I do strive for quality and high standards; adding value is what gets me out of bed in the morning, and I encourage others to do the same to help make Sunderland the best it can be. By embedding fair and transparent approaches and shared ownership, I aim to foster an inclusive culture where colleagues feel empowered, respected, and able to contribute to Sunderland’s collective success.
