Collaboration is not simply a way of working, but a core leadership responsibility.
Collaboration is important in my role because I have learned that progress rarely comes from my individual decisions. The work that I am responsible for, in most instances, can impact across the university. Without effective collaboration there is a real risk of a solution being technically sound but operationally unworkable or strategically aligned but poorly understood by those delivering them.
I have seen that effective collaboration strengthens decision making and trust. By working openly with colleagues across technical Services and the wider university, I gain a fuller understanding of competing priorities, constraints, and risks, which helps me to make more balanced and credible decisions.
On a personal level, collaboration challenges my assumptions, surfaces perspectives I may not otherwise have considered, and ensure that my leadership remains collected to the experience of a broad range of staff and users. This has reinforced for me that collaboration is not simply a way of working, but a core leadership responsibility.
I collaborate by being deliberate about how and when I involve others, rather than treating collaboration as an informal or ad-hoc activity. I place particular emphasis on creating clarity so that collaboration feels purposeful rather than burdensome.
I try to create environments where challenge is welcomes and differences can be explored constructively. I have learned that my role is often less about providing answers and more about facilitating alignment, helping others see how their contributions connect to wider objectives.
I make a conscious effort to listen before responding, to explain the reasoning behind decisions, and to adapt my approach based on feedback. Where work spans teams or services, I often act to translate priorities, resolve misunderstandings, and maintain momentum when delivery becomes complex.
Reflecting on my practise, I see collaboration as something I continuously refine. I actively look for opportunities to strengthen relationships, to empower others to lead, and to model the behaviours I expect to see across Technical Services.
